Pepper Drive Residence: Los Altos, California

A centerpiece of this 4,000 SF single-family home is the dramatic two-story circular stair. Its curved glass rail looks effortless, but actually took three months of hard work and re-work. This home received a sustainability rating of 113 GreenPoints through California’s BuildItGreen program. Green building measures included construction waste recycling of minimum 50%, the use of engineered lumber, and low-emitting insulation. The home is designed for efficient energy performance, achieving a 30% margin above California’s standards for energy-efficient homes. Extra attention was given to the bathrooms; each one is unique¬ly detailed with custom cabinetry and fixtures. Materials were chosen for quality and to be cheerful, open, light, and pleasing. The master bath is a temple devoted to the experience of bath¬ing; a bathtub on a plinth with a view to the outdoors occupies its own alcove next to a custom vanity and glass-enclosed shower. The kitchen is designed to be a real working kitchen, with granite and top-of-the-line appliances that are positioned to be useful as well as beautiful. The exterior of the home was designed to harmonize with the surrounding homes, with a low profile. The material palette is natural, with a metal roof, ledge stone veneer, and integrally colore cement plaster. Pella windows and doors were chosen for their energy efficiency and quality detailing.   Design: Mark English Architects Photos: Norma Lopez Molina
