Quartermile Masterplan: Edinburgh, UK

This scheme for the renewal of the historic Edinburgh Royal Infirmary site extends the practice’s investigations into the creation of sustainable, mixed-use urban communities, continuing themes first explored in schemes such as the King’s Cross and Duisburg Inner Harbour master plans. The project master plan consists of mixed-use development, landmark Central Square of 52,500 sq ft net office accommodation, 8,000 sq ft retail space and more. Original plans to develop an office block were revised to allow homes and shops to be built. In addition to exterior restoration of old buildings, a 3 storey glass enclosed stairway forms the western end of the new central square at the heart of Foster & Partners master plan. There are plans to build Twin Towers in this vast array of developments that will run till 2015. Completed conversions include apartments in the 4 Victorian buildings that house 24 flats per block. Commercial space is also ready for occupancy and operation.  Architect: Foster and Partners Photographer: Nigel Young
